Guest Bathroom Reveal and a Thank You

I just love how this little bathroom remodel turned out.  This is a guest bathroom that is also used as a powder bath, so it needs to look beautiful for guests whether they are staying overnight or not.

Before photos below.

It was okay, but it could be so much better.

We started with the creamy yellow wall color used throughout the home to inspire the finishes.  I found this lovely wallpaper that is the real feature in this bathroom.  Gray with some yellow and a watercolor effect.

From there, the antiqued 6 x 6 slate tiles for the floor from Thorntree in Houston. They have the perfect shadings of greige and the brushed finish feels great underfoot.

Then came the beautiful white onyx for the counter and splash.

love that white onyx, sort of greige with yellow veining

The new tub is a deep soaker, selected by the homeowner.  It fits well in this compact space.  We did it in the biscuit finish which related in color to the onyx.
Biscuit subway tile for the bathing surround.  I didn't want to use the slate for this, it would've been too dark and masculine and would've made the tub stand out as bright white.  As it is it blends in with the tub and makes a nice bathing alcove.

Pretty paint colors that bring out the color in the wallpaper and the onyx,

brushed nickel fixtures and hardware in a simple design so as not to take away from the wallpaper.

A mirror in a special finish,

a custom shower curtain to fit the space perfectly with an end to end curtain rod mount in a finish that relates to the mirror frame.

There are so many different elements that go into pulling a small space like this together.

You know, it's all in the details.

Before and After Kitchen

A before and after kitchen/breakfast room remodel of mine from a few  + years ago.  The 1990 dated finishes had to go.  Glossy small tile, dated wallcovering and window treatments, tired cabinetry, mauve solid surface counters and splash were out.  The homeowner wanted a more sophisticated, neutral palette with a traditional look.

After

I felt the big space needed some contrast.  The homeowner had selected the dark granite when she came to me so I chose a paint color in a similar value for some contrast in the cabinetry.  All cabinetry was existing, we added some traditional details like legs and paneling to the island and brackets and seed glass panels to some of the upper cabinets.

I love the delicatus granite on the island.  Doing a contrasting granite here took some convincing!

Look at that awkward backsplash.  We spent some money relocating outlets and switches as best we could (with remodels sometimes that's all you can do) and I did a low backsplash that would blend with the counters.  The switches that still showed were done in a Lutron color to match the wall color to minimize the visual clutter.

A corner fireplace that you really never noticed when you walked around the corner into the kitchen.

After

We went floor to ceiling tumbled travertine and furred out a bit to make that corner fireplace a star.

After Breakfast Room

What a beautiful view they have.  We highlighted it by framing the windows in a contrasting color to blend with the black window frames.  All her furniture was reused and reupholstered.  We even just ended up painting her bar stools and reusing them.

Done some 5 years ago, I think it's stood the test of time.  These clients were such a delight to work with.  I went back a few years later and redid their master bedroom and bath.  Repeat clients are the holy grail of an interior design business.  You don't have to prove yourself again!

Kitchen Remodel - Before and After

After

Before

Here are after and before photos of a kitchen remodel I recently completed. We kept some of the cabinets, replacing the doors, and did a new island and new wall of cabinetry along the frig wall. The homeowner didn’t like the white cabinets and the color scheme was very dated. A fresher, cleaner look was desired with a softer color palette. Existing floor tile remained to keep budget costs down.

I like the way it turned out with the contrast in the island, countertop, and glass front cabinet interiors. It’s a much slicker look and has a more updated appeal. I would have preferred a new darker floor, something halfway between the light and dark values to ground the space, but the homeowner preferred to keep their existing tile. It is a nice new kitchen that has added much value to the home and is much more enjoyable for the homeowners....and it doesn't look just like every other house next door! I'll post the window treatments we did in this space later in the week.
