Kitchen Cabinets to the Ceiling

Darryl Carter - Elle Decor

I'm loving upper kitchen cabinets taken all the way to the ceiling.

It appears to be popular!

 Nancy Boszhardt - House Beautiful

 Kay Douglas - House Beautiful

Whether your ceilings are high or low or if you have a traditional or modern style, it is a great look and gets rid of that dust catcher shelf that people always feel like they have to decorate.

This is a before photo of a kitchen remodel I've recently been working on.  10 ft. ceilings and a typical upper cabinet height.  It makes the space look very horizontal and monotonous.  Mostly, it brings the ceiling down.  The homeowner wanted a new white kitchen, but loves the bit of wall color above the cabinets and needed display space for ceramics.

Here's what I proposed.  Cabinets to the 10 ft. ceiling, with color inside and a painted sheetrock hood that would make a more dynamic color statement than a strip above the cabinets.  I think it adds height to the room and gives a strong focal point to the kitchen.  Can't wait to see the end result!

I've moved! Check out my new design blog at Designed w/Carla Aston.

  2. I love the look of to the ceiling cabinets. It is also great because there is no cleaning above the cabinets.

  6. Love your observation about gets "that dust catcher shelf that people always feel like they have to decorate." Since I live in anapartment, unfortunately there's not much else I can do but add a few knickknacks & cookbooks! The kitchen remodel sketch is beautiful - I'm sure your clients will be pleased.

  7. Since I live in an apartment, I can really relate to your "that dust catcher shelf." Storing my less-used cookbooks seems to be my only option. I love your kitchen remodel solution; I'm sure your clients will be pleased.

  8. Great post! I had custom made kitchen cabinets when I lived in PGH and they went right to the ceiling with a 1/2" to spare. It was a very small kitchen so I needed all possible storage space. It was just a pain getting things up on top when you needed them but it looked great!

I'm bookmarking and linking this post - love it!

  9. I just added this post to my list of favorites because you have given me some great inspiration here for the disaster going on in my kitchen right now. I really wish I could get rid of everything in here, but this is basically an interim fix because we have a bigger project with an addition next year on the drawing board. I liked what you did to showcase the client's collection of ceramics around the upper part of the cabinets. The PH really should be tarred and feathered for the mess she made in here! I will check in regularly to see what updates you are posting. Thanks for visiting me!

  10. I especially love the idea of glass front cabinets up high. It's a great way to display pretty, but less often used serving pieces or silver.

  13. I couldn't agree more that cabinets to the ceiling the way to go. I dislike immensely that awkward space that people tend to over decorate with fake plants and bottles filled with pickled vegetables and such. The kitchen design your working on is going to be gorgeous Carla.

Hope you have a good, good weekend! Deb

  14. Found you through Maria's blog. I love your site, and if I found you earlier, I wouldn't have made a mistake remodeling my mom's bath! (I'm not a designer, just an enthusiast!). I gave her a vanity the same height as a standard sink, when I see I could've just lowered the whole counter giving her a right-height vanity and a lower sink. Shucks. I would love it you posted more often, even about your thoughts and design process. I always find that interesting in a design blog! Good luck!
